Laboratory Mixing System for Oil and Water-Cut

RMS-20 Mixer for Oil and Water-Cut Analysis

The RMS-20 Laboratory Mixer is designed for mixing wet and dirty oils and/or condensate who are sampled from pipelines from Fiscal Metering and Custody Transfer applications. Due to the lapse of time between taking a sample and the actual analysis in the laboratory, heavier components such as water can drop out and separate. It is therefore necessary that the contents of the receiver are sufficiently mixed to homogenise the product before taking a sub sample for analysis.

Doedijns manufacture mixing systems, either for permanent installation in sampling systems or as stand-alone units for use in laboratories. These mixing systems interface with our PSR-5/10/20 receiver cans (not included) but maybe used with other manufactures vessels using suitable adaptors..

Method of Operation

The electrically or pneumatically pump draws fluid from the lowest point in the receiver vessel. The liquid is then pumped under pressure through the loop returning it back to the receiver via the inlet nozzle. The inlet pipe of the receiver is designed such that the liquid is forced through a small aperture causing a jet stream and rotation of the product in the vessel.

Included in the loop is a static mixer to enhance the mixing performance and a take-off valve.

The system is mounted on a drip pan to collect any oil due to spillage. It also has a connection to allow it to be piped to a drain system.

Mixing times range generally from 1 to 15 minutes depending of the products being mixed.

Karl Fischer Water-Cut Analysis

This laboratory mixer is the preferred technique for sampling and analysis of wet and dirty oils samples like crude oils and/or mixed condensate. The mixer is normally used in laboratory to re-create and ensure a homogeneous mixture before analysis, the sample can directly used for the Karl Fischer water content analysis.

Fiscal Metering and Custody Transfer Applications

The Karl Fischer analysis are typically used to measure the water content with automatic pipeline sampling method, this is very important for the fiscal metering and custody transfer applications where crude oil or petroleum products are exchange in ownership at the point of sale. To measure the water-cut (water content) gives accurate values in the quality of the transferred main crude oil product.

Mixing System Standards

There are three well-known sampling standards that are used worldwide for mixing of crude oil samples. Standards are based on the API 8.2, ISO-3171 and ASTM D.4177 standards and the equipment totally complies with these.

  • API 8.2: Standard Practice for Automatic Sampling of Petroleum and Petroleum Products
  • ASTM D.4177: Standard Practice for Automatic Sampling of Petroleum and Petroleum Products
  • ISO-3171: Petroleum liquids - Automatic pipeline sampling
  • Other standards (e.g. GOST) may be specified.

Homogeneous Sample with Laboratory Mixer

The big advantage of the laboratory mixer system is the possibility to take a representative sample in the laboratory even if the sample was due to the lapse of time between taking a sample and the actual analysis is several hours or days, the product will be re-mixed in minutes of time and re-create a homogeneous sample what is ready for accurate analysis.

  • Creating closed loop systems emission free which provide a safe, controlled environment
  • Suitable for high pressure process application
  • In-the-line or fast-loop samplers
  • Fixed or variable volume receivers
  • Simplifying designs, making the sampling of liquid and gas more efficient
  • Proper discharge of excess liquid or gas prevents unwanted pressure build-up in the system
